AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a K-16 future readiness system designed to create or enhance a schoolwide culture that supports high expectations and high levels of achievement for all students. The mission of AVID is to “close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.” For more than 35 years, AVID has accelerated student learning, used research-based methods of effective instruction, provided meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acted as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. To learn more visit www.avid.org.
The AVID Elective class targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but are falling short of reaching their potential. For one class period a day students learn organizational study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college attainable. As students progress in the AVID Elective their self image improves and they become more academically successful students, leaders and role models for other students.
The AVID Tutor facilitates Socratic-style discussion groups aimed at helping students develop a deeper understanding of core academic concepts. To prepare for their role as facilitators in this process, AVID Tutors receive initial training and ongoing coaching relative to the AVID system and methodologies, the tutorial process, Costa’s Levels of Thinking, and Cornell note-taking.
